The Draft Lottery: 757 B-boy Event 1-29-11

this exhibition of b-boys was sponsored by radioactive cardboard created by my homie ron, a.k.a. johnny breaker. we recently teamed up to promote this organization and i'm honored and excited to be part of it.

i've been an avid fan of break dancing since 1995. i took my very first photographs of a b-boy senior year of high school for the annual student gallery show. i won two awards for them. a decade or so later, me and photographing b-boys have become synonymous.

lynnhaven underground: 7-1-10

self-expression. it's in what we wear. it's in what we say. it's in how we sing a song or rap a verse. it's in our dance moves. it is LOVE.

What's the 411?

on sunday april 11th, marco hosted a fundraiser at our philippine cultural center. my mission was to organize an exhibit to showcase works of local artists at the event.

i was able to exhibit my "sampayan" series.

there was also a variety show featuring many talented youth from the community that sang, danced and performed spoken word and skits. the crowd was so diverse. it was exactly how marco envisioned it... all ages and all races.

the program closed with our local b-boys in a cipher and of course i couldn't help myself to some photo taking.

sometimes all it takes is natural stage presence to get the crowd going. hehehe.

support your local artists and talent!

summer cipher

i went to a b-boy/b-girl cipher during the summer. here are some featured images i captured. more images from this event are posted in my facebook album. enjoy :)

if you lay down the vinyl... they will come.

stretching is key

"Each time a b-boy or a b-girl stepped in the cipher, they wrote their own generational narrative. Starting upright in the top-rock, hands up and stabbing like a gang-member in motion, feet moving side to side like Ali in a rope-a-dope, dropping down like James Brown, turning hurricanes of Spy's boricua footwork, exploding into a Zulu freeze, tossing in a spin and punctuating it all with a Bruce Lee grin or mocking Maori tongue-the entire history of the hip-hop body in a virtuoso display of style." - Can't Stop Won't Stop by Jeff Chang

East Coast Breakers: Breakin' Bread

this event was put together out of love and respect for breakin'. it was a reunion for old skool kats and a gathering for any and all to be part of the cipher. what i love about events like these is the sense of community it brings.

dj + break beats = beware the breaker

to me, the b-boy/b-girl is an artist that uses their own body as a medium to creatively express themselves.

they defy the laws of gravity. rebels of the dance floor. making lines and fluid movement with their bodies. it moves me as well. to capture that precise moment when the breaker hits the climax of their move and freeze it in a photo.
